How Much Should You Tip?
Tipping customs vary by country and service type. Here's a general guide for the United States:
- 10%: Poor or disappointing service
- 15%: Acceptable, standard service
- 18-20%: Good service (most common)
- 25%+: Excellent or exceptional service
Tipping by Service Type
- Restaurants: 15-20% of bill
- Bartenders: $1-2 per drink or 15-20%
- Food Delivery: 15-20% or minimum $3-5
- Hair Stylists: 15-20% of service cost
- Taxi/Rideshare: 15-20% of fare
- Hotel Housekeeping: $2-5 per night
Tip Calculation Formula
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
Quick Mental Math Tip
For a quick 20% tip calculation: move the decimal point one place left (that's 10%), then double it. For example, on a $85.00 bill:
- 10% = $8.50
- 20% = $17.00 (double it)
- 15% = $12.75 (halfway between)
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or after-tax amount?
Technically, tips should be calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. However, many people tip on the full amount for simplicity. The difference is usually minimal.
Is it okay to leave no tip?
In the US, servers often earn below minimum wage and rely on tips. Only leave no tip for truly terrible service, and consider speaking to a manager about the issue instead.
How do I split a bill with different tip amounts?
Our calculator splits the tip equally. If some people want to tip more or less, have each person calculate their own portion separately.
What about tipping in other countries?
Tipping customs vary globally. In Japan, tipping can be considered rude. In Europe, 10% or rounding up is common. In Australia, tipping is not expected but appreciated.
Should I tip on takeout orders?
Tipping 10-15% on takeout is a nice gesture, especially for complex orders. During the pandemic, tipping for takeout became more common and continues today.
