GPA Calculator: How to Calculate Your Grade Point Average

!Education and studying

Whether you're checking college admissions requirements, maintaining scholarships, or tracking academic progress, understanding how to calculate GPA (Grade Point Average) is essential. Different schools use different scales, but the principles are the same.

Use our GPA Calculator for quick calculations.

Standard 4.0 GPA Scale

Letter Grade to GPA

Letter GradePercentageGPA Points
A+97-100%4.0
A93-96%4.0
A-90-92%3.7
B+87-89%3.3
B83-86%3.0
B-80-82%2.7
C+77-79%2.3
C73-76%2.0
C-70-72%1.7
D+67-69%1.3
D63-66%1.0
D-60-62%0.7
FBelow 60%0.0

GPA Calculation Formula

Step 1: Convert Grades to Points

For each course:

  • Identify letter grade
  • Convert to GPA points (from table above)

Step 2: Multiply by Credit Hours

`` Quality Points = GPA Points × Credit Hours `

Step 3: Calculate GPA

` GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours `

Worked Example

Your Semester

CourseGradeCreditsPointsQuality Points
ChemistryA44.016.0
CalculusB+43.313.2
EnglishA-33.711.1
HistoryB33.09.0
ArtA24.08.0
Total1657.3
Semester GPA = 57.3 / 16 = 3.58

Cumulative GPA

To calculate cumulative GPA across multiple semesters:

` Cumulative GPA = Total Quality Points (all semesters) / Total Credits (all semesters) ``

Example: Three Semesters

SemesterQuality PointsCredits
Fall 202352.015
Spring 202448.514
Fall 202457.316
Total157.845
Cumulative GPA = 157.8 / 45 = 3.51

Weighted vs Unweighted GPA

Unweighted GPA

All classes valued equally on 4.0 scale.

  • An A in PE = An A in AP Chemistry
  • Maximum: 4.0

Weighted GPA

Advanced/honors classes get extra points:

  • Regular class A: 4.0
  • Honors class A: 4.5
  • AP/IB class A: 5.0
Maximum can exceed 4.0 (often 5.0 scale).

Why It Matters

Colleges often look at:

  • Weighted GPA for comparing rigor
  • Class rank (often weighted)
  • Course difficulty in context

Improving Your GPA

Strategic Course Selection

  • Don't overload difficult courses
  • Balance with courses in your strengths
  • Consider summer courses for tough subjects

Study Strategies

  • Attend all classes
  • Office hours for help
  • Study groups
  • Tutoring when needed

Grade Recovery

  • Retake failed courses (policies vary)
  • Grade forgiveness programs
  • Credit/no-credit for risky courses

GPA Boost Math

To increase GPA from 3.0 to 3.5 with 60 existing credits:

  • Current quality points: 180
  • Target: 3.5 with 75 credits = 262.5 points needed
  • Need to earn 82.5 points in 15 credits = 5.5 average (impossible on 4.0 scale)
The more credits you have, the harder it is to change GPA significantly.

Pass/Fail and GPA

Pass/Fail Courses

  • Usually don't affect GPA
  • Credits may count, but no quality points
  • Some graduate schools recalculate including P/F

Withdrawals

  • W grades don't affect GPA
  • Too many Ws look bad on transcript
  • May affect financial aid/full-time status

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calculate GPA without credit hours?

Yes, but it's less accurate. Simple average of GPA points works if all classes have equal credits.

Does high school or college GPA matter more?

  • For college admissions: high school
  • For graduate school: college
  • For jobs: usually neither after first job

How do I convert percentage to GPA?

No universal formula. Use your institution's scale or approximate:

  • 90-100%: 4.0
  • 80-89%: 3.0
  • 70-79%: 2.0
  • 60-69%: 1.0

Is 3.0 GPA good?

It's average at competitive schools. 3.5+ is generally considered "good" for most purposes.
